Marshall Students sharpen skills with summertime tutoring
At David Crockett Elementary in Marshall, students have been sharpening their skills this summer in reading, writing, and math over the summer.
Teachers, along with Math Interventionist, Gay Greer, planned free summer tutoring sessions for students going into third and fourth grade.
Some students lose an average of two months in reading achievement over the summer break, making summer an excellent time to bridge the gap in essential readiness skills needed for the next school year and to maintain learning.
Averages of 35 to 45 students attended tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Marshall Visual Art Center. Students from David Crockett, St. Joseph, South Marshall, and William B. Travis have participated in this learning opportunity.
Greer, through the nonprofit organization, AAA Fund Raisers, Inc., has been working over 20 years to provide additional educational opportunities for students. These students needed assistance to master skills to achieve their potential in school.
Dedicated volunteers and teachers are working together with parents in this endeavor.
"We are having a successful program and thank those who have donated," Greer said. "We are still in need of monetary donations to provide this much needed assistance to students."

A group of students and teachers visited the Michelson Museum and viewed the Maxam Collection of Spanish Painting since 1900. The students wrote about their favorite paintings Thursday to improve their writing skills.
